Serenity

Well, this past Saturday, my wife and I saw the movie Serenity. Admittedly, I was/am a huge fan of the tv show, and couldn't wait to see the movie. My wife had only seen snippets of the show here and there, so was not nearly as excited as I was, although she was looking forward to the movie.

Let me just say, the movie was frickin' awesome!!!!!!!!!!! (Sorry about that crude language, but the movie just rocked.)

I won't give away any plot details, except that the movie is definitely typical of other Joss Whedon adventures, in particular Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There are some definite moments in the movie when you will say, "Hey, that's a Buffy move/pose/etc."

Like I tell people, believe in Joss and go for the ride.

As with most Joss Whedon shows, the action is fun, fast-paced, and just barely believable. But his dialog is in still in rare form. Yes, you can tell it is scripted at times, but it is darn funny.

The most important thing, I believe, was that the characters stay true to form from the tv show, and remain somewhat believeable in the actions. Mal is still Mal, looking out for number 1, but still putting his neck on the line for anyone he cares about. Zoe, still takes charge. Wash (Hawaiian Shirt and all) is still upbeat and provides a nice alternative to Zoe. Jayne still needs a brain, but is still hilarious, and may actually be a good guy. Simon still needs to eaze up a bit. River is still as crazy as ever, but does get to show case her "Buffy" powers. Kaylee still knows the workings of the ship better than anyone, and is the only femine influence on the ship. Shepard Book is not in the film much, but does provide Mal on some insight into Mal's beliefs. Inara is still Inara (which of course makes for lots of fun when Mal and Inara are together.)

But the best character was The Operative. Wow! I particularly enjoyed the scenes where the operative explained why he did what he did, and how he knew he was evil.

I can't wait for the sequel. (Provided this film makes enough money.)

Yes it did. So, lets get the word out so people will watch this awesome movie. Universal will sign on for a sequel if it makes $80 million internationally.
